Frequently Asked Questions FAQ's

Where can I obtain an Application Form for Citizenship?

Application forms for Australian Citizenship can be obtained by calling: The Department of Home Affairs on 131 880, or the Citizenship Website https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/citizenship/become-a-citizen

How do I know when my ceremony is?

Once the Department of Home Affairs has sent your letter approving your application for Australian Citizenship, they will then send you a letter of invitation advising you where and when your Ceremony will take place. Council has no prior knowledge of a Conferee’s details or what Ceremony they are allocated to until a Pledge Verification List is received from the Department of Home Affairs for the conducting of a Ceremony.

What if I cannot attend the ceremony?

Please advise Council if you cannot attend, we in turn will advise the Department of Home Affairs and you will be allocated another Ceremony date. If you consistently fail to attend you will need to discuss your circumstances and options with the Department of Home Affairs.

How do I get my citizenship?

Federation Council is only responsible for conducting Citizenship Ceremonies. We have no input with applications, approvals or certifications. All enquiries about applications and approvals need to be directed to the Department of Home Affairs on 131 880 or at https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/citizenship/what-does-it-mean

How long will the ceremony go for?

The Citizenship Ceremony takes approximately 30 minutes. All Conferees must arrive by the time detailed on their notification letter for registration purposes. The Ceremony commences at the time listed on your notification letter. Light refreshments are provided at the completion of the Ceremony. If a Conferee does not attend the Ceremony, their Certificate will be returned to the Department of Home Affairs and another Ceremony date will need to be allocated.

What do I need to bring?

Proof of Identity (Licence, Passport, Visa etc.) and your letter of invitation from the Department of Home Affairs.

Can I bring guests?

Yes. Reserve seating will be provided for conferees and guests. Depending on the number of conferees, your guests may not be able to sit next to you. Every effort will be made to have guest reserved seating in close proximity.

Can I have my photograph taken at the Ceremony?

A Council photographer may take your photo. Should you not wish photos to be taken please notify Council Staff at you sign-in prior to commencement of the ceremony. Please bring your camera or mobile phone and you will be given permission for family members and friends to take photographs. We prefer guests to remain seated until the conclusion of the Ceremony. At the completion of the Ceremony the Mayor and dignitaries will be available for photographs with Conferees.

Can I leave after I receive my certificate?

No, the ceremony will continue with the singing of the National Anthem. The Mayor will invite conferees for additional photographs after the ceremony along with serving of refreshments.
