Corowa History

There are many threads that weave together to form modern Corowa. A journey into the past is a discovery, and you might just uncover the secret to our busy town and proud people.

Howlong History

The name Howlong is derived from the Aboriginal word ’Oolong’, meaning a gathering of native companions (Brolga birds), and these birds still nest in the district today. Howlong’s colonial origins can be traced back to 1836 when NSW surveyor-general Major Mitchell set up camp on the southern bank of the Murray before crossing the river as part of his Australia Felix expedition.

Mulwala History

In 1842, explorer Hamilton Hume assisted his sister-in-law Elizabeth Hume to form the ‘Yarrawonga Run’. Elizabeth was the first European to live in northeast Victoria. She moved to the area with her nine children after her husband was killed by bushrangers. Elizabeth named her home ‘Byramine’, meaning ‘rustic retreat’.
