Corowa Pioneer Cemetery
Located on Federation Avenue, the Corowa Pioneer Cemetery is the original town cemetery with its earliest recorded interment dating back to 1859.
The headstone of Mr Andrew Hume, nephew of Mr Hamilton Hume of Hume and Hovell fame can be found in the eastern section of the cemetery. A memorial wall remembers those whose graves cannot be identified.
History
The first known burial in the Corowa Cemetery (‘Old’) is that of Andrew Hamilton Hume who died aged 30 and was buried on 27th July 1859. Mr Hume was the nephew of the renowned explorer Hamilton Hume and the owner of Brocklesby Station until 1858.
Four of the Delegates to the 1893 Corowa Conference are also buried here: -
GG Haig, Rev. WC Hose, AA Piggin & FC Piggin.
The Cemetery was managed by a Cemetery Trust and individual burial records kept by the local Churches and the Undertakers.
Management of Cemeteries in the (then) Corowa Shire became Council responsibility in 1973 when the Corowa Lawn Cemetery was established on Cemetery Lane west of the township. There were no further new plots available after that time, although burials still continue for those with Rights of Burial.
