Howlong Cemetery

Howlong Cemetery

The Howlong Cemetery located on Ashford Road was established in 1863 and has witnessed the passage of generations.

It overlooks the river flats and Black Swan Lagoon and has been expanded to accommodate the growing community.

The cemetery includes a Pioneer section, a Columbarium Wall, Monumental section, Lawn section, individual Rose Garden and Memorial Tree gardens.

History

Originally part of the County of Hume, Parish of Howlong, Land district of Corowa and Land Board District of Albury. As such a variety or ownership, little wonder that in the early days the cemetery was poorly maintained.

The cemetery was divided into General Cemetery, Independents, Jewish, Wesleyan, Church of England, Roman Catholic and Presbyterian.

A petition was drawn up for the erection of a secure fence around the cemetery as many correspondents bemoaned the fact of the decaying wooden fence which saw the degrading of the cemetery. Under Grants for Local Purposes, a grant of 21.10s for the Howlong Cemetery to renew the fence from the Department of Lands in December, 1889. Hardly a major funding amount..

In 1895 a visitor to the Howlong Cemetery wrote about the beautiful monuments which were surrounded by dilapidated wooden fences. Some monuments were at risk of being totally lost due to high grasses sad fences.

Some of the very early graves were for Ludwig Koehn 1865 and Henry Pettiford also in 1865.
