Urana Cemetery

Urana Cemetery

The Urana Cemetery is located on Lake Road and incorporates a Monumental section, a Columbarium and an RSL Monumental section.

Cemeteries are not only significant areas for genealogy searches but give a snapshot into life in the area – here it was tough in the early years!

History

A look at the headstones throughout the cemetery reveal that during the late 1800's and early 1900's many adults did not live past 30 years of age.  A number of headstones mentioning deaths by accident can be found.  An amazing exception is a man who died in 1884 aged 94 years!

The Simpson Vault is a prominent feature of the Cemetery were six family members currently lie ranging from 1877 to 2020.

The oldest known grave is James Hallinan Date of Death 22/5/1870. There are numerous unmarked and unknown graves in the old sections of the Urana Cemetery. The cemetery has an RSL section commemorating those that lost their lives in all Australian wars.

During 2013 Urana Central School students took part in a community services program where they cleaned and restored monumental stones in the RSL section of the cemetery.

The fence was constructed with a Riverina Water grant in 2020.
