2024 NSW Local Government Elections

Councillors are elected for a four year term, with elections held on the second Saturday in September every four years.

Federation Council's election will be administered by the NSW Electoral Commission and the election will be held on Saturday, 14 September 2024.

All residents are encouraged to check their enrolment details prior to the election date by calling the NSW Electoral Commission on 1300 135 736 or by visiting their website. 

Non Residential Roll

To provide information about the non residential roll. Claims for inclusion on the non-residential roll must be made on the prescribed application forms available below and returned to Federation Council before 6:00pm on Monday, 5 August 2024.

Becoming a Councillor is a rewarding experience that gives everyday people the opportunity to guide the long term vision and direction of our local communities.

Councillor Induction Guide

All prospective candidates should note that Federation’s induction program will commence in October 2024, with a schedule of activities planned through to December 2024.

Election signs are regulated under the Election Act 2017 and State Environmental Planning Policy (Exempt and Complying Development Codes) 2008.

Postal Voting & Pre-Polling Voting Centres

If you will be overseas or interstate on Election Day, you can apply for a Postal Vote, or attend a pre-poll voting centre before you leave. Voting is not possible at any overseas embassies or interstate offices.

Federation Council Poll Ballot paper

At the 2024 NSW Local Government elections electors in Federation council will be given a ‘poll’ ballot paper to complete, in addition to their Councillor ballot paper.

1. Monday, 1 July 2024

  • Start of the capped expenditure period

2. Monday, 22 July 2024

  • Notice and advertising of entitlement to enrol and vote

3. Monday, 5 August 2024

  • Start of regulated period for electoral material
  • 8am: Lodgement of nominations open
  • 6pm: Close of roll for the purposes of being a candidate or nominator

4. Tuesday, 6 August 2024

  • Lodgement of postal vote applications open

5. Wednesday, 7 August 2024

  • Notice and advertising of election and to nominate

6. Monday, 12 August 2024

  • Half-yearly donations and major political donors disclosure due

7. Wednesday, 14 August 2024

  • 12 noon: Close of nominations and close of registration of candidates and groups
  • Registration of electoral materials open

8. Thursday, 15 August 2024

  • 2pm: Ballot paper draw conducted
  • 2pm: Uncontested elections declared

9. Monday, 19 August 2024

  • Postal packs distribution begins

10. Monday, 2 September 2024

  • Display of registered electoral material website commences

11. Friday, 6 September 2024

  • 5pm: Registration of electoral material closes

12. Saturday, 7 September 2024

  • Pre-poll voting period opens (Note: days and times will vary for each location)
  • Telephone voting applications and voting opens

13. Monday, 9 September 2024

  • 5pm: Postal vote applications close
  • Registration of third-party campaigners close
