Capital Works Program Update - December 2023

Council has an ongoing program of capital works and upgrades to buildings, parks, playgrounds and roads across the Federation Council Region. The following activities were undertaken during December 2023 by Federation Council’s Operations Works teams.
Boree Creek Road 900-meter reconstruction
This project witnessed substantial progress with the completion of gravel finishing in the initial week of December, followed by the sealing of the road on 8 December 2023.
Construction Work at Yamma Road and Morundah
Contracted construction operations at Yamma Road and Morundah progressed as scheduled, facilitated by council engaged contractors. These works were funded through the Regional and Local Roads Repair Program.
Hard Waste Collection (north)
The first week of December was dedicated to the hard waste pickup across all northern townships along with proficient management of the Urana Landfill.
Balldale Road 8km reconstruction – LRCI Grant
8km section now complete as per Fixing Local Roads – Round 3.
Footpath Maintenance Program
Footpath repair program continued, focusing on trip hazards and high pedestrian traffic areas.
RLRRP Grant – Shoulder Rehabilitation
Council secured funds from NSW Government for Regional Local Rural Road Repair Program to undertake road repairs on sealed and unsealed roads after the floods in late 2022.
Council is using this grant to fund Shoulder Rehabilitation on various roads throughout the LGA.
Works ongoing in December – Back Berrigan Road, Merton Road.
Table drain maintenance
Endeavours to accelerate our table drain maintenance program were evident this month. Our inspection team diligently commenced maintenance activities, primarily entailing clearing out of table drains.
Please Note: Works were carried out only in zones where no impact can be made on the Sloanes Froglet (between April and October breeding season).
Sealed Roads
- Line marking of intersection hold lines, loading zones, disabled carparks in Corowa. Line marking Howlong Medical Centre carpark.
- A surge in December of customer reported potholes on both urban and rural sealed roads was experienced. These requests were prioritised and addressed accordingly.
- Using the Jet Master patching truck, a responsive approach was adopted, resulting in the resolution of most complaints within a commendable 7-day timeframe.
- Work is continuous on all roads such as: Federation Way south/north, Jerilderie Road, Boree Road, Urana/Boree/Morundah/Oakland and Rand township and rural roads.

Heavy Trucks
- Boree Creek – bulk earthworks and gravel carting.
- Balldale Road – bulk earthworks and gravel carting
- RLRRP – gravel carting for shoulder rehabilitation
- Carting stone for patching trucks, Flocon and JetPatcher
- Carting excess spoil from Mulwala to Corowa Landfill for cover & capping
TfNSW – RMCC
Maintenance works under the RMCC agreement continued in December.
Quarries
Planning is well under way for the next phase of blast and crushing at the Balldale and Daysdale quarries. The gravels will be used for upcoming RLRRP and capital works programs. Awaiting contractor.
Slasher
North: Slashing works in December focussed on the Urana Township and Oaklands. Due to limited staff resources in the Urana Depot, staff were redeployed to road patching works in order to undertake these tasks safely and efficiently.
South: Howlong-Goombargana Road, Drew Lane, Howlong Burrumbuttock Road.
Corowa Aerodrome
Twice weekly inspections carried out to ensure compliance with the MOS 139. Repairs to lights as required. Herbicide spraying on runway shoulders and around wind indicators. Table drain maintenance, grass runway strip maintenance.
Slashing of grass runways to meet MOS 139 compliance, surrounds also slashed to suppress weeds and reduce fire risk.
Covid 19
One Outdoor Operations staff members were affected during December.
