The Federation Youth Council is looking for a new home for the CommUNITY Piano.

The piano has spent several months at Origin Clothing and this has seen many people sit down and bang out a tune. There has been the special and beautiful sounds of Ludwig van Beethoven Für Elise and then there has been the noise of small fingers who played the piano with little regard to musicality, equating loudness to excitement.

The Youth Council’s CommUNITY Piano project is about building community and connecting all people to arts and culture in a unique and sustainable way. The piano was refurbished and created into something new which changes the dynamics of a space, and based on this the piano is serving its purpose. It is bringing people together, and is changing the dynamic of the environment it's in. The piano is a "smile generator." People have stopped to play it, or they have stopped to listen. They have stopped to talk to STRANGERS.

It is now time for the piano to activate a new space in Sanger Street and the Federation Youth Council is inviting business owner / operators to become the next ‘Piano Partner’ and support the project by wheeling the piano out onto the footpath and then inside their business from the outside elements at the end of the day.

The piano is an original Beale Piano, made from local timbers and was made to suit the changeable Australian Climate. It has an all-iron tuning system which means it can continue to be tuned for many years to come. The CommUNITY piano has been tuned to concert pitch.

The Stage 5 Studio to Street Art class at Corowa High School painted the piano under the guidance of Aboriginal Artist, Iris Hill with the final piano depicting a scene of the river with each girl’s totem animal stencilled as well as their hand prints.

If you would like to become a Piano Partner or wish to discuss the CommUNITY Piano project further, please contact, Amber Harvey, Community Development Team Leader, on (02) 6033 8974 or email amber.harvey@federationcouncil.nsw.gov.au

We hope you continue to enjoy having the piano as part of your business community.
