The Mulwala All Abilities playground project for Purtle Park, scored a major breakthrough at Council’s January monthly meeting, with Council committing to delivering all three stages of the park design, totaling a $1.82 million dollar investment. The family friendly park will contain a free-standing all-abilities play system, that will quite literally ‘reach to the skies’, with children able to move between sky cabins, along swaying paths five meters above the ground. The project will also deliver a new toilet block and parking under separate funding.

The design includes a nod to the Yarrawonga Mulwala Traffic Bridge, with the theme including a dip, and suspension bridge. The larger play elements are designed to encourage risk taking and problem solving for older children, along with natural park elements of logs and rocks to promote balance. Toddler play areas, a fenced play area, water and vertical play areas, a basket swing, the pelican nest and hideaway frames and flying fox are other well-thought out ideas and features.

Federation Council Mayor Pat Bourke said Council was proud to award the tender for the Mulwala All Abilities Playground project and commit further funding to the project to ensure a state of the art playground will be created. “This project has been a priority of the Mulwala and wider community for some time, and Council is looking forward to delivering on this in one project, and not delaying it in stages, for the benefit of the Mulwala community and the wider region,” Mayor Bourke said.

“This project will provide a multitude of benefits for all and is a fine example of what Council and our communities can achieve when we work together. The creation of the new playground will deliver a vibrant, sustainable and inclusive community facility that promotes social, cultural and environmental benefits which will encourage greater visitation to one of Council’s major environmental assets, being Lake Mulwala. I’d like to thank the community groups, staff and others involved in getting Council to this exciting milestone. I with my fellow Councillors very much look forward to seeing the project roll out.”

The $1.82 million dollar playground tender was awarded to Enviro Culture Services and works are set to commence in March 2020. Completion of the infrastructure project is expected to be completed in Spring 2020, with an official opening to be held soon after, to celebrate the addition of the iconic new development.
