Construction works to revitalize Memorial Plaza in Corowa are set to commence this week.
This space will be transformed from a walk way through to Sanger Street into a Youth friendly space, the whole community can enjoy.
The upgrade will include café style seating at the Sanger Street end, Community notice board upgrade and the addition of a mural wall, lighting upgrade and roof improvements. The update will continue through the Memorial Plaza with updated seating/furniture, drinking fountain, upgraded bins and lighting.
Federation Council Mayor Pat Bourke said Council was thrilled to see this work commence before Christmas, to ensure the space is activated throughout December and ready for use early in the New Year.
“This project will transform the Memorial Plaza space into an inclusive, vibrant and community friendly youth space,” he said.
“The Memorial Plaza upgrade was selected as one of 27 regional Council’s and 14 Councils in Greater Sydney to deliver a total of 48 successful projects, temporary street transformations, cycle ways, pop up parks and rejuvenated public spaces."
Kade Sarte has been engaged to complete the mural work on the internal Memorial Plaza wall that will follow the local and Australian native animal theme with some interactive pieces included around the doorway openings.
Federation Youth Council Mayor Maxim Blockley said this is an important milestone for the Federation Youth Council as this Youth Space will be here all year round for the community to enjoy.
“We are excited to start using this space for the multitude of community events we have been planning," he said.
“We are excited that works are commencing and we look forward to opening this new space early in January 2021.”
The construction site will be sectioned off to ensure public safety, with walking access only still remaining to allow pedestrian access to public toilet amenities located in Queen Street.
Federation Council was successful in receiving a $97,000 Streets as Shared Spaces grant from the NSW Government to deliver this community project.
