Council offers free waste disposal for flood affected residents

Federation Council will for the next two weeks offer free waste disposal at their waste facilities located in Corowa and Howlong for flood affected residents.
Floodwaters have had various impacts on private property and Council infrastructure following reports of up to 180mm of rainfall across Saturday, January 29 and Sunday, January 30 throughout the Corowa region.
Federation Council General Manager, Adrian Butler said he had spoken to many flood affected residents who had suffered devastating property damage as a result of the unprecedented rainfall.
“This is without a doubt a freak weather event that thankfully doesn’t occur often and there is much work to be done collectively by Council and residents over many days and weeks ahead,” he said.
“After speaking with Councillors this morning, it was agreed that Council would open their waste facilities and offer free waste disposal for flood affected items. It is hoped this decision will assist residents in their clean-up efforts and further support our residents through what is a really difficult time for many.”
Federation Council Mayor, Cr Pat Bourke said he drove to Corowa on Sunday, January 30 to view the flood water damage first hand and speak to local residents.
“It is clear that a lot of our residents are still in disbelief that something like this has happened,” he said.
“To have 180mm worth of rain in four hours is just unbelievable. One thing that I have taken away from this experience is the absolute appreciation our residents have for one another and leading agencies who assisted during and after the freak storm. Everyone rallied together to support one another in a time of need and collectively do everything possible to limit damage to one another’s properties. I am positive that the support for one another will be ongoing as the clean-up effort continues.
The Corowa Waste Management Centre is open additional hours, 9am - 3pm daily until Sunday 6 February, 2022 to help support flood affected residents. The Howlong Waste Management Centre is open on Tuesday from 1pm – 4pm and Sunday 9am – 12 noon.
Residents are requested to please bring proof of address and flood affected items only to be eligible for free waste disposal.
