National Mental Health Month is held throughout October across Australia to raise awareness and promote better mental health for all.

This year’s theme is ‘Building Resilience: Communities and Connections’

Throughout October, Federation Council will promote key wellness messages, aiming to raise awareness and promote better mental health for all.

Mayor Patrick Bourke said Mental Health Month provides us with a great opportunity for the Federation community to think about our mental health and wellbeing, regardless of whether we may have a lived experience of mental illness or not, and support each other within our community.

“Our everyday lives are often so busy that we sometimes need reminding of how important it is to stop, be in the moment and to reflect on our health, as before we realise it our daily lives can catch up and have an impact on our wellbeing,” he said.

“Council has and will continue to play a crucial role in supporting community wellbeing and providing connections to services.

Federation Council and the Federation Primary Prevention Team partnered earlier this year on the ‘Our Council Cares Card(PDF, 297KB)’ initiative. The ‘Our Council Cares Card’ includes a list of some of the State, National and local services that people can get in touch to talk about how they are feeling or determine what assistance is available. These services are also there as a sounding board for people to talk through how you may be supporting someone else who is under mental distress. Every household across the Federation LGA received a card in the mail.

Being present by tuning in has been shown to help build self-awareness, help make effective choices, reduce the impact of worry, and build positive connections. – quote from WayAhead NSW https://mentalhealthmonth.wayahead.org.au/
