The NSW Government Stronger Communities Fund has enabled another community project to come to fruition, in the construction of a new netball court at John Foord Oval in Corowa.

The official opening of the new court was held on Saturday and was well attended by official guests, sponsors, supporters and members of the Corowa Rutherglen Football Netball Club community.

Corowa Rutherglen Netball President Rowena Black said the new netball court has been a long term goal of the football netball club and they were very pleased to see the creation of a new court come to life this season.

“We would like to thank our official guests that attended the opening, the representative from Rivalea, Kellie Laing, Daryl Davey from the Federation Council, Members of the O&M board and O&M Netball Sub-Committee, our sponsors, volunteers, members of past players, board members and supporters on what was such a special day for our club,” she said.

“We particularly want to thank our long term sponsor Rivalea who, through their sponsorship, enabled us to seek funding through the Stronger Communities Grant from the Federation Council.

“We are grateful for community minded organisations such as Rivalea and the Federation Council who see the importance of providing quality facilities that support grassroots sporting clubs, such as Corowa Rutherglen FNC and other netball clubs who will also use this facility.”

Ms Black said since the introduction of the Under 16s grade in the Ovens and Murray League, the Corowa Rutherglen Football Netball Club has struggled to provide the space and training area that enabled the entire squad of up to 40 players to train together.

“The new court now enables us to provide an environment to aspiring local netballers to develop their skills and to train with senior players from our club,” she said.

“Great facilities such as these promote a professional and positive learning environment for any netballer from Corowa, Rutherglen and surrounding districts to pursue a pathway through the Ovens & Murray League and beyond.”

Federation Council Administrator Mike Eden congratulated the Corowa Rutherglen Football Netball Club committee on completion of the construction of the new netball court at John Foord Oval.

“The new netball court will provide ongoing social benefits to the community for a long time to come and we are delighted to be a part of such a great project,” Mr Eden said.

“Local sporting clubs are such an important part of small communities and thanks to the NSW Government Stronger Communities Fund we have been able to allocate much needed funding to upgrade the netball court facilities at John Foord Oval.

“This project is a great example of Council and the NSW Government partnering with community groups and organisations to achieve fantastic outcomes for Federation communities.”

The Stronger Communities Fund was established by the NSW Government to provide councils with funding to kick start the delivery of projects that improve community infrastructure and services.

18 projects were funded in Round One of the Stronger Communities Fund in the Federation Council area and a further 13 projects were funded in Round Two.

Federation Council Local Representative Committee Member Daryl Davey attended the opening on behalf of Federation Council and said he was honoured to represent Council for the official opening of the new netball court.
