Last Friday, fifty eight girls from Corowa High School and Oaklands Central School attended a Project Empower workshop as part of a program being delivered by not-for-profit organisation, Country to Canberra.

Project Empower is a national workshop designed to empower young women in regional, rural and remote Australia to reach their leadership potential.

From May - August this year, Project Empower has been visiting every state and territory in Australia to run these uplifting, free leadership and gender equality workshops in regional high schools and for community groups.

Federation Council was successful in its expression of interest to host the workshop in Corowa and worked in partnership with local schools to provide the opportunity for young people to be involved in the initiative.

The students heard from Hannah Wandel, a social entrepreneur, gender equality advocate, public speaker and the Founder and CEO of Country to Canberra, Rachel Alger a second year university student, who had just completed an internship at “Google” and Dr Skye Saunders, Associate Professor at ANU College of Law, established author and Australia’s leading expert in the area of sexual harassment in rural communities.

The workshop aimed to inspire self-confidence and empower young women, discuss leadership styles, merits and role models, encourage young women to acknowledge and embrace their strengths, understand concepts around intersectionality and gender equality and discuss the solutions, the important role of solidarity and supporting one another, and leave the young women with the belief that they can do anything.

Federation Council has thanked Project Empower for visiting, Corowa High School for hosting the event and Oaklands Central School for attending.
