Council wishes to provide the following update in respect to the Kerbside Bin Collection service in the Northern Townships.
Council has employed a private waste collection contractor for the Northern end of the shire for the past 20 years. This contract has been reviewed and renewed a number of times and in the last year was extended for a final 12 month period to align with the introduction of the regional waste contract for 8 neighbouring councils (inclusive of Federation Council), commencing July 1, 2024. This introduction is part of the harmonisation of waste services between the two former council areas - Corowa Shire and Urana Shire councils. This former contract has been separate from the current 3 bin Cleanaway waste contract or the townships of Corowa, Howlong and Mulwala.
On Tuesday December 12, 2023, the driver of the Northern Townships collection vehicle had a single vehicle accident. The driver of the vehicle tragically lost her life and Council continues to extend their thoughts to her family and the wider community that have been devastated by this incident. Council would also like to take this opportunity to thank residents for their understanding whilst Council staff have provided a temporary service collection. Moving forward, Council staff have arranged for Cleanaway to undertake the Northern waste collection for the 6 month gap until the new contract formally starts. This is set to commence from next week, Monday, December 25, 2023. Further communication will be provided to residents in the New Year, inclusive of a bin collection calendar. For the interim, all collection dates will remain the same as they were previously under the former Northern bin collection contract arrangements.
